It is an endangered species found in the Appalachian Mountains. These mountains are in the southeastern United States. This tree lives in very specific places. This tree has a very distinct way of growing. It has a conical shape, which looks like a cone. The branches can grow straight or angle upward. Young trees have many branches that make them look dense. As they get older, the branches become more open. The needles are long, flat, and flexible. They are dark green on the top side. The undersides have two silvery white bands. The tree also has a strong scent.

Scientists have studied this tree for a long time. It is named after a Scottish botanist named John Fraser. He lived from 1750 to 1811. He collected many plants in this mountain region. In the past, people called it the "she-balsam." They gave it this name because they could milk resin from its bark. This was different from the "he balsam," or red spruce. The red spruce did not have these resin blisters.

Many facts tell us how the tree lives and grows. It is monoecious, meaning it has both male and female cones on one tree. The female cones grow near the top of the tree. The male cones grow below them. These cones can be dark purple or pale brown. They release winged seeds when they are mature. New trees can start growing when the parent tree is 15 years old. They grow well in moist soil or even on old logs.
