A tiny insect has caused problems for these trees. The insect is called the balsam woolly adelgid. It came from Europe. This insect killed over 80 percent of the mature trees. This happened very fast. However, new young trees are now growing back. In some places, the number of adult trees is going up again. This gives hope for the future of the forest.
