Young trees grow straight up like a cone. As they get older, they drop their bottom branches. This stops vines from climbing them.

Kauri trees change the soil to help them grow. They drop leaves that are very acidic. This means they are sour. When it rains, the water carries this acid down. This is called leaching. This process, known as podsolization, washes away food from the dirt. It makes the soil a dull grey color. This makes it hard for other plants to live there.

These trees can live for a very long time. Most live over 600 years. Many may live for more than 1000 years. Scientists use tree rings to study the past. These rings can show climate changes from 4,500 years ago. Kauri also have special roots. They have peg roots that act like anchors. These keep the big trees from falling in storms.
