The kauri is a truly massive tree from New Zealand.

It is the largest tree in the country by volume. While it is not the tallest, it reaches high into the forest canopy. This tree has smooth bark and narrow, leathery leaves.

These leaves grow in pairs or groups of three. The kauri is a foundation species. This means it changes its environment to support a unique community of plants.

Kauri trees use a clever way to grow. They drop leaves and branches that are very acidic. When it rains, the water carries these acids down through the soil. This process is called leaching. It leads to podsolization, which is a way the soil changes color to a dull grey. This process washes away nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. Because these nutrients are gone, it is hard for other plants to grow nearby.

This helps the kauri compete for space in the forest.

A scientist named David Don first described this species. He named it *Dammara australis*. The name *Agathis* comes from a Greek word meaning "ball of twine." This refers to the shape of the male cones, also called strobili. The name *australis* means "southern." This helps tell it apart from other *Agathis* trees in tropical areas. The Māori name comes from an old word for dark-colored trees.

These trees can grow to be incredibly huge. Some have trunks wider than the famous Sequoias in California. One famous tree was called The Great Ghost. It grew near Tararu Creek and was 6 meters wide. Another tree, Kairaru, was measured by Henry Wilson in 1860. It had a very straight, columnar trunk. Even though many giant trees were lost to fires, kauri are still very impressive.

Kauri trees are also amazing timekeepers. Most live longer than 600 years, but many live over 1000 years. Scientists study tree rings to learn about the past. This is called dendrochronology. Kauri rings provide a record of climate change going back 4,500 years. This is the longest record in the southern hemisphere. These trees also have special peg roots. These roots act like anchors to keep the heavy trees steady during big storms.
