The Sitka spruce is a truly giant tree.

It is the largest species of spruce in the world. It is also the fifth-largest conifer on Earth. This tree can grow to be incredibly tall. Some individual trees reach heights of 100.2 meters. That is about 329 feet tall!

This makes it one of only three tree species known to grow that high. It is a massive part of the forest.

This tree has a very specific way it works. It grows in extremely wet and poorly drained soil. Because the ground is so soggy, it has a shallow root system. The roots spread out sideways rather than deep down. This can make the tree fall over in high winds. The leaves are also very unique. They are stiff, sharp, and needle-like. Each needle is 15 to 25 millimeters long. The tops are dark blue-green, while the bottoms are blue-white.

People have studied these trees for a long time. The Sitka spruce gets its name from Sitka, Alaska. This is a place where the tree is very common. In the 1800s, a man named David Douglas introduced them to Europe. He planted them in 1831. Since then, they have spread to many new places. They are now common in Great Britain and Ireland. In Norway, they grow much faster than the native trees. Some people even call them an invasive species there.

There are many amazing facts about these giants. The Queets Spruce is the largest specimen ever recorded. It has a trunk volume of 1,491 cubic meters. It is located near the Queets River in Washington.

Another tree, the Carmanah Giant, is the tallest in Canada. These trees can live for a long time. The oldest known Sitka spruce is nearly 600 years old. Even though they grow fast, they can still live for many centuries. They are very important for the health of the forest.

You might see these trees in many different ways. Their wood is very special because it is strong but light. This makes it great for making musical instruments. Violins, harps, and guitars often use this wood. It was even used to build the Wright brothers' first plane.

Many animals rely on them too. Bald eagles and peregrine falcons use them for nesting. Blue grouse even eat the needles during the winter. The forest is a busy, living home for them all.
