Araucariaceae is a family of tall evergreen trees.

These trees stay green all year long. Most of them live in the Southern Hemisphere today. You can find them in places like Australia and New Zealand. They also grow in New Caledonia and parts of South America. Long ago, they grew all over the Northern Hemisphere too.

They were very common during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. These ancient times were when dinosaurs ruled the Earth.

These trees have a very special way they grow. They often have tall, straight trunks. The branches usually grow in layers or circles around the stem.

The leaves can look like small needles or large, flat shapes. To make new trees, they grow cones. Some trees have both male and female cones on one plant. Other trees are dioecious, which means they have only one kind. Male cones are often long and hang down from the branches. Female cones are round and sit upright on short shoots.

When the female cones are ready, they fall to the ground. Their seeds have little wings to help them fly in the wind.

Scientists have studied these trees for a long time. They found fossils that show these trees are very old. Some fossils date back to the Early Jurassic period. One amazing discovery happened in 1994. This was when people found the living Wollemia species. Before that, scientists only knew about them from fossil remains.

This was a very big surprise for the world of science.

There are 41 known species in this family. They belong to three main groups called genera. These groups are Araucaria, Agathis, and Wollemia.

One very famous tree is named Tāne Mahuta. It is a kauri tree from the Agathis group in New Zealand. This tree is massive and has a huge diameter. It is the third-largest conifer in the world by wood volume.

Another tree, the bunya-bunya, has cones as heavy as a large pineapple.

Many people use these trees in their daily lives. Some people plant them in gardens because they look beautiful. Others use the wood to make high-quality items. Some seeds even taste like pine nuts and can be eaten. In Turkey, people use fossilized wood called Oltustone.

They turn this black, fossilized wood into shiny jewelry. This shows how even ancient plants can be part of our world today.
