Female cones are also very large and have a different shape. They are spherical or ovoid and grow upright on short, thick shoots. These cones consist of many bracts and scales. In these trees, the scales usually bear only one seed on their upper surface. This is different from true pines, which usually have two seeds per scale. The seeds are among the largest in the conifer group. They use wing-like structures to disperse via the wind. When they are mature, the female cones detach and fall to the ground.

Because these cones are so heavy, they can be dangerous. For example, the cones of the bunya-bunya tree can weigh up to 10 kilograms. That is roughly the weight and size of a large pineapple. These cones can drop from heights of 30 meters.
