Black spruce trees grow slowly. They have straight trunks and thin, greyish brown bark. Their leaves are dark green needles. These needles are stiff and four-sided. The tree makes very small cones. The cones grow in thick clusters at the top. They can be dark purple or red-brown.

These trees like wet places. They often grow in swamps or peatlands. A peatland is a wet area made of old plant parts. The roots of the spruce are shallow and wide. This can make them fall over in the wind. Sometimes, the ground thaws and the trees tilt. People call these "drunken trees."

Fire is a big part of their life. Black spruce often seeds right after a fire. This helps them grow back quickly. People use the wood for many things. It is used to make paper pulp and chopsticks. Some companies even use it to make strong building parts.
