The noble fir is a very large tree. It is also called the red fir. This tree is the tallest true fir in the world. It grows in the mountains of the western United States.

Young trees have smooth, gray bark. This bark has small blisters. As the tree gets old, the bark changes. It becomes red-brown and rough. The leaves are blue-green needles. They grow in a spiral shape around the branch.

The tree makes upright cones. These cones are long and thick. In the fall, the cones break apart. This lets out winged seeds. The tree only makes these seeds every few years.

Noble firs like cool and wet places. They can grow in rocky soil if it is moist. These trees can live for up to 200 years. People use the strong wood for many things. It is used to make paper and ladders. Many people also pick them to be Christmas trees.
