The coast variety grows west of the mountains. These trees grow very fast. They can reach 70 meters in height. The interior variety grows east of the mountains. These trees grow more slowly. They usually reach 40 to 45 meters tall. The leaves are like flat needles. They are dark green on top. The bottom has two white bands called stomata. These help the tree breathe. The cones are long and hold many seeds. When the cones get old, they fall apart. This lets the winged seeds fly away.

A man named David Douglas first described this tree. He was a botanical explorer from Scotland. In 1830, he brought seeds back to Britain. He described the trees in 1831. He found them near the Columbia River. This was in the Pacific Northwest. He helped the world learn about this large conifer.

There are many interesting facts about the grand fir.
