Humans have used the stone pine for thousands of years. For at least 6,000 years, people have cultivated it for its nuts. These nuts, or piñones, have been important trade items since early history. Beyond food, the tree provides resin and bark for tannin extraction. Empty cone shells are even used as fuel. The tree is also an important ornamental plant. It is a symbol of Rome and lines historic roads like the Via Appia. 
Despite its many uses, the stone pine faces modern ecological threats. An invasive pest called the Western conifer seed bug has spread across Europe. It was accidentally imported to northern Italy from the western US in the late 1990s. This bug feeds on the sap of developing cones. This action causes the developing seeds to wither and misdevelop. In Italy, this pest has destroyed most of the pine nut crops. Additionally, a fungus known as Pestalotiopsis pini has emerged in Portugal. This pathogen causes shoot blight and stem necrosis. These pests and diseases threaten the health of pine forests throughout the Mediterranean basin.
