However, recent genetic and morphological evidence proved they are actually distant relatives. As a result, scientists moved the tanoak into its own genus, Notholithocarpus. This discovery helped clarify the true evolutionary relationships between these trees.

Understanding the many species of Lithocarpus requires complex classification systems. In 1948, a researcher named Aimee Camus created a major treatment of the genus. She studied specimens at the Natural History Museum in Paris, using many collections from French colonies in Indochina. Camus identified 13 subgenera, which are smaller groups within the genus. Her largest division was the subgenus Pasania, which contains 209 species. Other subgenera vary greatly in size. For example, Cyclobalanus contains 58 species, while Pachybalanus has 14. Some groups, like Castanicarpus or Cyrtobalanus, contain only one or two species.

While Camus's work was highly detailed, it was not a complete picture of the genus. Her system did not incorporate many species from the Malesian region south of the Isthmus of Kra. Later researchers, such as Soepadmo, wrote the Flora Malesiana treatment but did not integrate his findings with Camus's system. This means much work remains for scientists to organize the genus perfectly. Early researchers once thought stone oaks were primitive members of the Fagaceae family. However, exhaustive studies of 73 species showed that important evolutionary characters distinguish these major groups. This research helps scientists understand how the different genera within the beech family developed over time.
