The tree makes very large acorns. These acorns are the biggest of any North American oak. The acorn has a large cup. This cup has scales that overlap. The acorns are important food for wildlife. Black bears may even break branches to find them. The tree uses a way called masting. This means it makes a huge crop of seeds every few years. This helps some seeds survive.
