It lives in the warm Southeastern United States. Most people call it the live oak. These trees are very old. Some have lived for over 400 years!

Its leaves stay green almost all year. We call these trees evergreen. But they are not true evergreens. They drop old leaves in the spring. Then, new leaves grow in their place. The leaves are dark green and shiny. The bottoms are a pale gray color.

This tree can survive big storms. It has a deep taproot to hold it down. It also has a wide root system. These parts help it stand in hurricanes.

Its branches often sweep low to the ground. Some branches even grow at strange angles.

The tree makes small acorns. These are tan or dark brown. Many animals eat them. Squirrels, deer, and turkeys love these acorns.

The tree also gives shade. Its thick leaves make a very dense crown. This helps many animals find a place to nest.
