Myrmecia is a large group of ants found mostly in Australia.

These ants are very important to study because they are quite different from other ants. People often call them bull ants, bulldog ants, or jack jumper ants.

They are known for being very fierce and aggressive. Some species even jump when they feel agitated.

They have long mandibles, which are their large jaws. They also have huge compound eyes that help them see very well.

The way these ants live is very interesting. Most species build their nests in the soil.

Some make homes in rotten wood or under rocks. One special species lives only in trees.

The life cycle from an egg to an adult takes several months. A queen mates with males to start a colony. She then hunts for food while the babies grow.

Adults eat sweet things, but the larvae eat other small animals. Unlike many other ants, the workers hunt alone. They do not lead their friends to food.

Scientists have been studying these ants for a long time.

Joseph Banks first described an ant called Myrmecia gulosa in 1770. He was on the ship HMS Endeavour with James Cook.

Later, the zoologist Johan Christian Fabricius established the Myrmecia genus in 1804. Many scientists have worked to name the different types. For example, Frederick Smith placed them in different families in 1858.

Other experts like Carlo Emery and William Morton Wheeler also studied them. In 2015, Robert Taylor described four new species in Australia.

There are many facts about the numbers and types of Myrmecia.

Scientists have described 94 different species so far. They think there might be as many as 130 species in total.

Their venom is among the most toxic in the insect world. In Tasmania, 3% of people are allergic to the sting of M. pilosula.

This allergy can cause very serious health problems. Some ants even have only one single chromosome. This is the lowest number possible for any animal.

You can think of these ants as the lone hunters of the insect world.

While most ants work in big teams to find food, these workers go out by themselves. They use their great vision to find their way.

Their stings act like a shield to keep predators away. Very few animals will eat them because of this. However, some things like echidnas still eat their larvae.

They are a truly unique part of the natural world.
