Yellow crazy ant

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The yellow crazy ant is a very large ant species. It is often called the long-legged ant or the Maldive ant. These ants are yellow or orange in color. They have very long legs and long antennae. People call them "crazy" because they move in wild ways when they are disturbed.

Scientists think these ants are native to Asia. Now, they live in many tropical places around the world. They are known as "tramp ants" because they move to new places easily. They can travel on boats, trucks, or other human transport. They are listed as one of the world's worst invasive species.

These ants are scavenging predators that eat many different things. They eat grains, seeds, and small bugs. They even eat decaying matter like dead animals.

The ants also need carbohydrates for energy. They get this from plant nectar and a sweet liquid called honeydew. This liquid comes from insects like aphids and scale insects. The ants and the scale insects have a special relationship called mutualism. The ants protect the insects from enemies. In return, the insects provide the ants with sugary food. This bond is very strong for these ants.

Scientists have learned many new things about these ants recently. In 2023, a study suggested a very strange way they reproduce. They have a unique cycle where males are "obligate chimeras." This means the male is made of two different sets of cells. This was the first known case of this in animals. Most ants have queens that lay eggs. These eggs can become queens or workers. But these crazy ants have a third, very unusual outcome. This discovery helps us understand how different living things can grow.

Yellow crazy ants can cause huge damage to nature. On Christmas Island, they caused an ecological meltdown. They form supercolonies, which are massive groups of ants living together. These ants spray formic acid to defend themselves. This acid can blind and kill land crabs.

Losing these crabs changes the whole forest. Crabs usually dig burrows and turn over the soil. Without them, weeds grow and the forest canopy changes. On Christmas Island, up to 20 million crabs were lost. This shows how one small insect can change a whole land.

These ants are found in many places today. They live in places like Hawaii, the Seychelles, and Australia. In Australia, they are found in Queensland and the Northern Territory. Some populations are very dense in the Pacific region. In Australia, they could cost the economy over A$3 billion. This is a huge amount of money. People use quarantine rules to stop them from spreading. We must be careful to protect nature from these tiny invaders.
