life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The yellow crazy ant is a large ant. It is yellow or orange in color. These ants have very long legs and antennae. They are called "crazy" because they move in wild ways when they are disturbed.

Scientists think these ants come from Asia. Now, they live in many tropical places around the world. They can travel on boats or trucks made by people.

These ants are scavengers. This means they eat many different things. They eat seeds, grains, and small bugs. They even eat dead animals.

They also love a sweet liquid called honeydew. They get this from tiny bugs called scale insects. The ants protect these insects. In return, the insects give the ants food. This is called mutualism, which is when two living things help each other.

On Christmas Island, these ants cause big problems. They form supercolonies. These are very large groups of ants that live together. The ants spray formic acid to defend themselves. This acid can blind land crabs. The crabs then die. Because the crabs die, the forest changes too. Many weeds grow where crabs used to live.
