Some nests are huge. They can be several metres wide. These nests often have many queens. This is called polygyny. Having many queens helps the colony grow and stay strong.

Red wood ants eat many things. They love to eat sweet honeydew from tiny bugs called aphids. They also hunt other small insects.

To stay safe, they use a special defense. They can spray formic acid from their bodies. They also collect resin from trees. Resin is a sticky substance. They mix resin with their acid to keep the nest healthy. This helps stop germs from growing. The resin also makes the nest strong and keeps it dry.
