Tapinoma sessile

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The odorous house ant is a small ant. It can be brown or black. It is only about 1.5 to 3.2 mm long.

These ants have many names. Some call them sugar ants or stink ants. If you crush them, they smell like a coconut or blue cheese. This is why they are called coconut ants.

One colony can have many nests. This is called being polydomous. Having many nests helps them find food. They move workers and queens closer to the food. This saves them a lot of work. They also share food through trophallaxis. This is a way where ants pass food to each other.

These ants are very tough. They can live in heat or cold. Some queens can live without food for two months.

They like to eat sugar and protein. They often look for honeydew. This is a sweet liquid made by tiny insects called aphids. Ants guard these aphids to get the food. They may even move into your house to find sweets.
