Most workers are only 1.5 to 2 mm long. They are light yellow or reddish brown. These ants live in warm places. They often live inside buildings.

These ants use smells to talk. We call these smells pheromones. They use three kinds of pheromones. One smell makes a long trail. This helps ants find their way. Another smell marks a food source. It does not last very long. The third smell is a repellent. This tells other ants to stay away from danger.

Pharaoh ant colonies are very smart. They have many queens. A colony can have up to 200 queens. This is called being polygynous. The ants can also move to new homes. They do this by budding. A small group leaves to start a new nest. This helps the colony grow fast. Some ants act like tiny storage tanks. They store food in their bodies. They can give this food to others later. This helps the group when food is hard to find.
