The pharaoh ant is a tiny insect that can be a big nuisance.

These ants are very small, measuring only about 2 mm in length. Most workers are light yellow or reddish brown with a darker abdomen. They are often found inside buildings like hospitals. Because they love warmth, they thrive in heated buildings even in cold areas. They have been found in many places, including Europe, the Americas, and Southeast Asia. Some people think their name comes from the Egyptian plagues.

These ants use special smells called pheromones to talk to each other.

They use three different types of these chemical signals. One pheromone creates a long-lasting trail to help ants find their way. A second pheromone marks a food source, but it fades away quickly. The third type is a repellent, which is quite unusual. This repellent tells other ants to stay away from danger or bad food. If an ant smells this, it might even walk in a zigzag pattern to avoid the area.

Pharaoh ant colonies have a very interesting way of growing. They are polygynous, which means a single colony can have many queens. Some colonies may have as many as 200 queens! These colonies grow through a process called budding. This happens when a small group of queens, workers, and young ants leave to start a new nest. This allows the colony to spread out and make many smaller nests. These new nests often work together instead of fighting each other.

Growing a new ant takes a specific amount of time. At 27 °C and 80 percent humidity, eggs hatch in five to seven days. The larvae live for about 18 to 19 days. After that, they go through a pre-pupal stage and then a pupal stage. In total, it takes about 38 to 45 days for an ant to reach maturity.

This cycle happens all year long if the building is kept warm.

Finding food is a team effort for these tiny creatures. Scouts go out to search for something to eat. When a scout finds food, it returns to the nest to tell others. The colony even uses a smart math trick to find its way home. When an ant reaches a fork in the trail, it chooses the path that turns the least. This helps them save energy by not making sharp turns. They also balance their diet by switching between protein and sugar.
