The British Agricultural Revolution was a time of huge change in farming. It happened between the mid-1600s and the late 1800s. During this time, farmers learned to grow much more food on the same amount of land.

This was not just one single event. Instead, it was a series of many different improvements over two centuries. These changes helped the food supply grow very quickly. This growth allowed the number of people in England and Wales to rise. The population went from 5.5 million in 1700 to over 9 million by 1801.

Farmers used new methods to keep their soil healthy and strong. One major way was through a process called crop rotation. This means planting different types of crops in a specific order.

In the past, farmers often left fields empty to rest. This empty land was called fallow land. A new way called the Norfolk four-course system changed this. Farmers began planting turnips and clover instead of leaving the land empty. Turnips have very deep roots that reach nutrients far down. Clover is a special plant that adds nitrogen to the soil. This nitrogen acts like a natural fertilizer for other plants.

New tools and ways of managing land also helped a lot. Farmers used new machines like the seed drill to plant crops. They also used a better version of the heavy iron plough. This plough was adapted from designs used in China.

Another big change was called enclosure. This meant setting boundaries around land to show who owned it. This allowed farmers to use new methods without others' animals walking through their crops. Better roads, canals, and even railways helped move food to new places. A national market also grew because there were fewer taxes on moving goods.

These changes happened in many different places around the world. While many call it the British revolution, it happened elsewhere too. In the Netherlands, farmers saw huge growth even earlier than in Britain. In the United States, production of wheat and corn grew very fast between 1860 and 1890.

In Russia, the amount of grain grown increased by 48% between 1867 and 1915. Even in Japan, crop yields grew quickly in the 1880s. These improvements helped many countries support more people.

The Agricultural Revolution changed how the whole world worked. Because farmers could grow more food with fewer workers, many people moved to cities. This provided the workers needed for the Industrial Revolution.

This era linked farming directly to the rise of modern factories and cities. It showed how science and new tools could change everyday life. The way we grow food today still uses some of these early ideas. It was a turning point that shaped the modern world we live in now.
