The Great Divergence describes a major shift in world history. For a long time, many parts of Asia were the most powerful. Places like Qing China and Mughal India were very wealthy. Then, Western Europe and its settler lands began to grow much faster. They overcame old limits on growth and became very strong. This change made the Western world the most dominant civilization. Historians use this term to explain how the gap between East and West grew so large.

Many things helped this change happen in a step-by-step way. New technology changed how people moved things and grew food. In the 18th century, Britain began using coal for energy. This was a big change from using wood. Using coal gave Britain a head start in making power. This led to more factories and more complex trade. These new ways of working helped the West pull ahead of other lands.

Historians disagree on exactly when this big shift began. Some believe it started during the Renaissance in the 1500s. They point to new ways of trading and the Age of Discovery. Others believe the real change happened much later. The "California school" of thinkers says it happened in the 1800s. They focus on the Industrial Revolution as the main cause. This was a time of huge leaps in new machines.

Real numbers show how much the economies changed. In 1600, England had three times the silver wages of China's Yangtze Delta. By the late 16th century, English wages were five times higher than in India. In the 18th century, English wheat wages were 2.5 times higher than in China or India. These gaps grew even wider during the 19th century. This was a time of rapid growth for Britain and stagnation for India.

This history helps us understand the modern world today. The Great Divergence peaked before the First World War. It continued until the early 1970s. Now, we see a new trend called the Great Convergence. Many developing countries are growing much faster than they used to. They are catching up to the wealth of developed nations. The world is moving toward a new kind of balance.
