Most ranches raise cattle or sheep. Some also raise horses, elk, or even alpacas.

People who run a ranch are called ranchers. They might also be called cattlemen or stockgrowers. Workers who handle the animals are often called cowboys or ranch hands.

Ranching has a very long history. In Spain, sheep were very important a long time ago.

Shepherds even rode horses to protect their flocks. In Mexico, ranching grew quickly in the 1500s. This happened because there was so much open land. Animals like cattle and horses multiplied very fast there. Early sites for these animals were called estancias. Some estancias even grew crops like hay to feed the animals. Today, some ranches are guest ranches. They let people visit for horseback rides or cattle drives. This helps the ranch earn more money.
