Combine harvester

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A combine harvester is a huge machine used to gather seeds from many crops.

It is a very important invention for saving labor on farms. This machine helps farmers collect wheat, rice, oats, and corn. It also works for soybeans, sunflowers, and rapeseed. Without these machines, much more work would be needed to feed people. The name comes from how it combines three different jobs into one. It performs reaping, threshing, and winnowing all at once.

The way it works follows a specific set of steps. First, an intake mechanism picks up the crop from the field. The crop moves up a feeder throat into a threshing system. Inside, a rotating drum called a cylinder uses metal rasp bars to rub the plants. This action separates the heavy grain from the lighter straw. The grain then falls through a mesh grill into a cleaning system.

This system uses sieves to catch the clean grain. Finally, a storage system holds the grain in a bin until it can be moved.

People have been improving these machines for a long time. In 1826, Reverend Patrick Bell designed a reaper in Scotland. Later, in 1835, Hiram Moore built the first combine harvester in the United States. His machine could reap, thresh, and winnow cereal grain. Early versions were very large and needed many animals to move them. One version in 1839 required a team of 20 horses to pull it.

Many different companies have made famous harvesters over the years. In 1911, the Holt Manufacturing Company made a self-propelled harvester. In 1923, the Baldwin brothers made a Gleaner harvester in Kansas. In 1953, a company called Claas made the 'Hercules' model in Europe. This machine could harvest up to 5 tons of wheat in a single day.

Today, some of the largest machines have nearly 800 engine horsepower. They use advanced electronics to help the driver see how much grain they collect.

Modern combines can do many different tasks depending on the crop. A farmer might use a special corn head to strip the leaves away from the ear.

For soybeans, they might use a 'flex' platform that bends over the ground. Some machines even have a hillside leveling system. This helps the combine work on steep slopes like the Palouse region.

Without leveling, the grain might slide to one side and get lost. This technology keeps the machine steady so it can work well on hills.
