The Olmecs were an early group of people in Mexico. They lived in a land of rivers and swamps. This area is called the Gulf lowlands.

Around 1200 BC, the Olmecs began to grow. They lived in a place called San Lorenzo. The rich soil helped them grow plenty of food. This allowed their towns to grow large. A group of leaders emerged in these towns. These leaders wanted fine things to show their power. They traded for jade and obsidian from far away.

Later, the people moved to a new center called La Venta. They built a very large pyramid there. It was the biggest building in their world.

The Olmecs also made famous art. They carved giant stone heads. They made small figures from clay and jade. They even played a ballgame with rubber balls.

By 400 BC, the Olmec cities were mostly empty. The land changed in big ways. Rivers moved to new paths. This made it hard to farm. Some think volcanoes also made them move. Even after they left, their ideas lived on in other groups.
