They called themselves the Cloud People. Long ago, many small groups lived in the valley. These groups sometimes fought each other. To stay safe, people moved to a high mountain. They built a great city there called Monte Albán.

Monte Albán became a very big center. It had large buildings and many tombs. Some tombs held beautiful gold jewelry.

Zapotec rulers grew very strong. They took control of many nearby areas. One special building has stones with carvings. These carvings show the leaders of the lands they ruled.

Later, the Aztec people invaded the valley. In 1521, Spanish explorers arrived. A Zapotec king chose to make peace with them. This helped his people avoid much fighting. After this, life changed a lot. New animals like horses and cows arrived from Spain. Many Zapotec people also got sick from new diseases. Even so, their culture stayed strong. Today, many people still speak Zapotec languages.
