This alliance grew very strong through war. They ruled much of central Mexico. The Aztecs used a system of indirect rule. They let local leaders stay in power. These leaders had to pay tribute to the empire. Tribute was a payment of goods or help. They also had to provide soldiers for wars. The Aztecs had many gods. They even held special Flower Wars. These wars were meant to capture enemies. Warriors wanted to catch people instead of killing them.
