Athletes must swim, bike, and run. They do these parts one after another. They race to see who is the fastest. The word comes from Greek. "Tri" means three. "Athlon" means a contest.

Early races were very different. In 1901, a race in France used a run, a bike, and a canoe. Later, the canoe part became a swim. The modern sport began in California in 1974. Two men, Jack Johnstone and Don Shanahan, helped start it.
