A triathlon is an endurance multisport race. It consists of swimming, cycling, and running over various distances.

Triathletes compete for the fastest overall completion time. They race each segment sequentially. This means they finish one sport before starting the next. The total time includes the transitions between the different disciplines. The word has Greek origins. It comes from "tri," meaning three, and "athlon," meaning competition.

To succeed, triathletes must follow a periodised training plan. This involves organized cycles of training to build specific skills. They must develop endurance, strength, and speed. Athletes perform workouts for each individual discipline. They also perform combination workouts to prepare for the transitions. General strength conditioning is also necessary. Some athletes use specialized gear, such as a speedsuit, to improve their performance.

Tracing the exact origins of triathlon is difficult. Some historians, like Scott Tinley, look to early 20th-century France. The earliest recorded event was in 1901 in Joinville-le-Pont. It was called "Les Trois Sports," which means "The Three Sports."

This event used a run, a bicycle, and a canoe. By June 19, 1921, the canoe segment was replaced by a swim. Other events appeared in Marseille and Poissy. By 1934, a race in La Rochelle included a channel crossing and a bike ride. However, no unified rules existed during this era.

The modern version of the sport began in Southern California. On September 25, 1974, the Mission Bay Triathlon was held in San Diego. Jack Johnstone and Don Shanahan organized this event.

The race began with a run around a loop. Then, athletes biked twice around Fiesta Island. The course then required swimming to the mainland. Participants had to swim again and eventually crawl up a steep dirt bank to finish. There were 46 entrants in this first race. Four years later, Judy and John Collins founded the Hawaii Ironman based on these ideas.

Triathlon spread to Europe in the 1980s. The first European event was in Plzeň, Czechoslovakia, in 1980. In 1982, the organizer IMG created a new event in Nice, France.

This was intended to compete with the prestige of the Hawaii Ironman. The first Nice Triathlon took place on November 20, 1982. It had 57 competitors. The race included a swim, a bike ride, and a marathon. A French television program called "Voyage au bout de la souffrance" helped introduce the sport to the public. Some critics were concerned because the Mediterranean water was only 18 degrees Celsius. Seven participants were even hospitalized due to the cold.

International organizations eventually formed to govern the sport. The European Triathlon Union (ETU) was created in 1985. In 1989, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded. The ITU's primary goal was to reach the Olympic Games.

In 1991, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized the ITU as the sole governing body. This led to triathlon becoming a medal event at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Today, the ITU is known as World Triathlon. They organize the World Triathlon Series and the World Triathlon Cup.

There are different types of racing organizations today. The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) is a private company. They organize the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races. The Ironman World Championship is held annually in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Other groups like the International Ultra-Triathlon Association (IUTA) govern ultratriathlon. These races involve distances longer than a standard iron-distance race. The sport continues to grow through various brands and local clubs.
