A lifebuoy is a tool used to save lives.

It is often shaped like a ring or a horseshoe. This device provides buoyancy to help a person float. It is designed to be thrown to someone in the water. This helps prevent them from drowning. Some modern versions even have special lights. These lights turn on when they touch seawater. They help rescuers find people in the dark.

The way a lifebuoy works is very simple. It is a personal flotation device. Most rings have a connecting line attached to them. This line allows a rescuer to pull the person to a boat. It can also be used to pull them to safety. Ships and boats carry these rings for emergencies. They are also found near swimming pools and bodies of water. In the United States, the Coast Guard calls these Type IV devices.

People have thought of ways to float for a long time. Leonardo da Vinci once sketched a safety wheel. He also drew ideas for shoes that could float. Long ago, the Knights of Malta used lifebuoys made of cork. A man named Juan José Navarro helped spread their use. He was the Captain General of the Navy. He made sure all Spanish navy ships used them. This helped make sea travel much safer.

Many different types of lifebuoys have been made. In 1752, a book showed circular lifebuoys made of cork. These were called "salvenos." Later, in 1803, an inventor named Knight Spencer made a new device. He called his invention the "Marine Spencer." He used 800 old tavern corks for his design. He put them on a band and covered them in canvas. He also used oil to make it waterproof.

Lifebuoys are part of a big group of rescue equipment. They are very important on large vessels. In the U.S., any boat 26 feet or longer must have one. In the UK, experts have different ideas for pools. They sometimes use a torpedo buoy instead. This is a low-drag device that a lifeguard can tow. It is safer for busy swimming pools. These tools show how we use science to stay safe.
