Dressage is a beautiful form of horse riding often called training.

People practice it as a sport or as an art form. It is the highest way to show horse training. The rider and horse work together as a single team. The rider uses their seat, legs, and reins to give tiny signals. The horse follows a memorized sequence of movements during a test.

This training helps a horse reach its full athletic potential. A skilled rider looks relaxed and makes the work look easy. The horse responds smoothly to even the smallest aids.

In a competition, the horse and rider perform in a special arena.

There are two main sizes of arenas used for these tests. A small arena is used for lower levels of training. A standard arena is used for most pure dressage competitions. These arenas have letters placed around the edges and the center line. These letters tell the rider exactly where to perform each move. At the start, the horse enters the arena at a spot called A. Judges watch the horse from different spots to see every angle. This helps them see if the horse stays straight while moving.

Dressage has a very long and rich history.

Its roots go back to the ancient writings of Xenophon. Modern dressage grew during the Renaissance period. In 1550, Federico Grisone published a book called "The Rules of Riding." This was one of the first big books on riding since ancient times. Many training systems used today are based on classical dressage. This old way of training is still kept alive today. Special schools in Austria, Portugal, and France preserve these traditions.

Judges score every movement on a scale from zero to ten.

A score of ten is excellent for a movement. A score of zero means the move was not executed. Since 2011, judges can also use half marks like 7.5. Some movements are very important and get a higher score. These are called coefficients, and they can double the points. Many different horse breeds can learn these skills. Warmblood horses are very popular in the Olympic Games.

Andalusian and Lusitano horses are also becoming very popular.

At the highest levels, the movements become very impressive.

The Grand Prix is the highest level of modern competition. This is the level seen in the Olympic Games. One special move is the piaffe, which is a trot in place. Another is the passage, a trot with high, bouncy steps. The horse also performs extended gaits where it lengthens its stride.

These movements require great skill and deep concentration. Every step shows the bond between the rider and the horse.
