Show jumping is a thrilling equestrian sport for horses and riders.

It is part of a group of English riding events. These include eventing, hunters, and equitation. You can see jumping classes at horse shows all over the world. They are even part of the Olympic Games. Some shows focus only on jumpers. Other shows include jumping as one part of a huge competition. Many different types of horses can take part in these events. Different groups, like the United States Equestrian Federation, help make the rules.

In a jumping class, the goal is to finish a course quickly and cleanly.

The course has many obstacles like verticals and spreads. Some jumps are even placed in combinations. Riders must try to jump without hitting any poles. If a horse hits a pole, it earns four faults. A horse might also refuse to jump. This is when the horse stops before a fence. Too many refusals can mean the rider is disqualified. If a rider is too slow, they get time faults. A perfect run with no penalties is called a "clear round."

Before the competition begins, riders often walk the course.

They walk the lines to plan their ride carefully. They count how many strides the horse needs between jumps. A standard canter stride is about twelve feet long. This planning helps them decide which angle to take. If two riders have the same number of faults, they enter a jump-off. This is a faster round with fewer jumps. In a jump-off, the fastest rider with the fewest faults wins. This makes the competition very exciting to watch.

Show jumping has a very interesting history.

Long ago in 18th-century England, new laws called the Inclosure Acts changed the land. New fences and boundaries were built everywhere. People who followed fox hounds suddenly needed horses that could jump. In early French shows, riders jumped across open country. This was hard for people to watch from one spot. Soon, fences were moved into arenas for better viewing. This style was called "Lepping." By 1869, Lepping became very popular at the Dublin Horse Show.

How people ride has changed a lot over time. In the past, many schools used a very deep seat. This seat used long stirrups to keep the rider secure. However, it made it hard for the horse to move its body. An instructor named Captain Federico Caprilli changed everything. He promoted a "forward seat" with shorter stirrups. This position helps the horse stay balanced while jumping. Today, most riders use this forward seat style. It allows the horse to use its full power to clear obstacles.
