Many people call it "high-speed chess." This is because players must think very quickly. Every match, or bout, begins and ends with a salute. This shows honor and good sportsmanship.

Fencers compete in three different styles. These styles are foil, épée, and sabre. Each style uses a special blade and different rules. Most competitive fencers pick one to specialize in.

In a match, fencers try to score hits. In pool rounds, a bout ends at 5 hits. It might also end after a 3-minute period. In knockout stages, a fencer must reach 15 hits. This can take up to 9 minutes of total time. The clock stops whenever the action pauses. For team matches, three fencers work together. They fence until one team reaches 45 hits.

Old books describe using swords and shields. The Italian school of fencing became very famous. It eventually helped create the modern sport. In 1763, Domenico Angelo helped change fencing into an athletic sport. He opened a school in London. He taught that fencing was good for health. He also set rules for posture and footwork.

There are specific rules for each weapon. The foil is a light weapon for thrusting. It weighs no more than 500 grams. You only score hits on the torso.

Modern machines help judges see hits. These machines use red or green lights. They also make a sound when a hit lands. This makes scoring much more accurate.

Many students fence at universities around the world. In the UK, schools even compete in championships. Some young children use foam or plastic swords. This makes it easier for more schools to try it. It is a fun way to learn the sport.
