Some call it "high-speed chess." This is because players must think quickly. Every match starts and ends with a salute. This shows good sportsmanship and honor.

There are three main types of fencing. Each uses a different sword. The foil is a light weapon. It targets only the torso. You score points using the tip. The épée is a heavier weapon. You can hit the whole body with it. The sabre is the third type.

In the past, fencing was for fighting or duels. In the 1700s, it became an athletic sport. A teacher named Domenico Angelo helped this change. He taught that fencing was good for health. Today, fencing is in every modern Olympic Games.

In a match, called a bout, fencers try to score hits. Some matches end after five hits. Others go until one person gets 15 hits. Modern tools help judges. A machine uses lights and sounds to show a hit. This helps make scoring very fair.
