Fencers use a steel weapon called a sabre. It is lighter than other fencing weapons. This makes it easy to move quickly.

You can score a point in two ways. You can hit with the tip of the blade. You can also hit by cutting with the edge.

Fencers aim for a specific target area. This includes the head and the arms. It also includes the torso above the waist. You cannot score by hitting the legs or feet. Modern sabre uses electricity to track hits. A fencer wears a special jacket called a lamé. This jacket helps the machine see a touch. The mask also uses electricity to help.

Sometimes two fencers hit at once. The referee must then decide who wins. They use a rule called right of way. This rule gives the point to the attacker. An attack starts when a fencer moves their arm. They must keep moving to keep their priority. This makes the sport very fast and precise.
