Players use their hands, rackets, or baskets to hit a ball against a wall. This wall is called a frontis or a fronton. Some games are played face to face with a net between teams. People play this sport in many different lands around the world. It is very popular in the Basque Country of Spain and France. You can also find players in places like Argentina, Mexico, and even the United States.

There are many different ways to play the game. These ways are called disciplines. Some players use their bare hands to hit the ball. Others use wooden rackets called paletas. Some use a special basket-shaped glove called a chistera. This long glove helps propel the ball at very high speeds. In a game called jai alai, the ball can travel at 302 km/h.

The roots of these games go back to ancient cultures. The sport grew from an old game called jeu de paume. In the Basque Country, people changed the game by hitting the ball against a wall. Historians believe the first recorded matches happened during Napoleonic times. In the mid-1800s, the sport became very popular. A player named Gantxiki is known as the father of the chistera glove.

Every ball starts with a core made of boxwood or latex. Workers wrap the core in latex wire or pure new wool. This helps the ball stay round and even. Then, they sew goat skin onto the surface in eight shapes. The balls come in different sizes and weights for different games. This ensures every player follows the same rules during a match.

Pelota has been part of big world events too. It was an official sport in the 1900 Paris Olympic Games. In 1924, the United States built its first fronton court in Miami. Some versions of the sport are played by both men and women. Other versions are played only by men. Even though it is an old tradition, it continues to be played by teams from all over the globe.
