A scimitar is a famous type of curved sword. It has a single sharp edge and a convex blade. Most blades are between 75 and 90 cm long.

The word scimitar is a European term. It does not name just one specific sword. Instead, it describes many different blades from the East. These include the Persian shamshir and the Arab saif. Other types are the Indian talwar and the Turkish kilij. They also include the North African nimcha and the Afghan pulwar.

These swords were designed to work in a special way. They were perfect for soldiers fighting on horseback. The curved shape is very helpful for slashing. When a rider is galloping, the arc of the blade matches the sweep of their arm. This makes the cutting strike much more effective. Because they are relatively light, they are easy to handle during battle.

This design helped them stand out from straight European swords.

History shows us how these blades spread across the world. The earliest evidence comes from the 9th century in Khurasan. At that time, Turkic warriors from Central Asia used early sabres. These soldiers were often employed as royal bodyguards. The Mongol invasions in the 13th century helped these curved designs spread further. After that, the adoption of these swords grew steadily until the 15th century. One single Seljuk saber from about the year 1200 still exists today.

Many different cultures and empires used these weapons. The Turks, Mongols, Rajputs, and Sikhs all used them in warfare. The Ottoman period saw these swords used widely throughout the Middle East. Later, the invention of smokeless powder firearms changed how people fought. This meant swords were moved from the battlefield to ceremonial roles. For a long time, the kilij was the most popular form in Islamic armies. The Iranian shamshir was also created during the time of the Seljuk Empire.

The sword is also a very powerful symbol in many cultures. In Arabic, the word for sword is saif. This word is used in many important titles. Some titles mean "Sword of Truth" or "Sword of the State." There is even a famous sword named Zulfiqar. It belonged to Ali and is a major part of Islamic history.
