The gladius was a very important tool for Roman foot soldiers.

It was used for many hundreds of years. This period lasted from the 3rd century BC until the 3rd century AD. The word gladius is a Latin word for sword. It can also mean any kind of sword in Latin. Today, we see this word in names like gladiator. We even see it in the name of a flower called gladiolus. This flower has leaves that look like small swords.

Roman soldiers used the gladius in a very specific way. They usually held a large shield called a scutum. A soldier would lead with his shield to stay safe. Then, he would use the sword to thrust forward. This stabbing motion was very effective in close combat. Sometimes, soldiers also used the sword to slash or cut. They might even slash at a foe's kneecaps.

They often carried other tools like javelins called pila. These were thrown to break up enemy lines first.

Early Roman swords were similar to Greek swords called xiphos. Everything changed during the Punic Wars in the 3rd century BC.

The Romans saw a new sword used by Celtiberian mercenaries. This special weapon was called the gladius hispaniensis. It was the largest and heaviest of all the gladii. The blade was about 60 centimeters long. It was also shaped like a leaf. Scipio Africanus helped promote this new design for the Roman army.

Making these swords was a very hard job for craftsmen. These workers were known as gladiarii. They worked in special workshops called fabricae.

To make a sword, they used iron ore from a furnace. They turned the ore into pieces called blooms. Some swords were made from one single piece of steel. Other swords were made by welding different strips of metal together. This helped make the blade strong. They often carved the owner's name right onto the blade.

Over time, the Romans made many different versions of the gladius. One type was the Mainz gladius used on the frontiers. It had a short, wide blade with a triangular point.

Another type was the Pompeii gladius used closer to home. This version had a longer blade but a smaller point. By the 3rd century AD, things changed again. The heavy infantry began using a different sword called the spatha. The gladius then became a weapon for lighter soldiers.
