A phalanx was a special way for soldiers to fight. It was a large, rectangular mass of troops. Most of these soldiers were heavy infantry. They carried long spears or pikes. They often stood very close together. This formation was not a specific unit like a Roman legion. Instead, it was a way for many soldiers to move as one.

To work well, the phalanx needed to stay in a tight line. Soldiers would lock their shields together. This created a strong shield wall. The first few rows of men would point their spears forward. This made it very hard for enemies to attack from the front. The soldiers usually walked at a slow pace. Moving slowly helped them keep their shape. If the line broke, the formation would fail.

People have used similar ways of fighting for a long time. The earliest known picture is from the Sumerian Stele of the Vultures. This was made in the 25th century BC. In that picture, troops used spears and large shields. Ancient Egyptian soldiers also used similar groups. Later, the Greeks made the phalanx very famous. The poet Homer used the word to describe organized battle lines.

In ancient Greece, these soldiers were called hoplites. They often fought on flat, open plains. It was hard to keep a straight line on hills. Each hoplite carried a large shield called an aspis. This shield was shaped like a bowl. It helped protect the soldier and the man to his left. Because of this, the right side of the group was often less protected.

Being in a phalanx required great trust. Soldiers often fought alongside their friends and family. This helped them stay brave during a fight. There were leaders in every row to keep order. A special officer called a tail-leader watched the back. The phalanx was only as strong as its weakest person. If the men stayed together, the formation was very hard to break.
