A drafting machine is a tool for technical drawing.

It helps people make very precise drawings. The tool has two scales. These scales meet at a right angle. They sit on a protractor head. A protractor is a tool used to measure angles. This head moves across a drawing board. Two guides help it move. One guide moves up and down. The other guide moves side to side. You can lock these guides in place.

Charles H. Little invented this tool in 1901. He started a company in Cleveland, Ohio. By the 1920s, many companies in Europe used them. Some older models used a pantograph. A pantograph is a system that keeps the head at the same angle. These machines often used springs to stay balanced.

Most machines sit on a smooth drawing board. You can tilt the board to any angle. This makes it easy to work. Some boards have lights inside them. This helps with copying work. Today, people use computers to draw. This means fewer people use drafting machines now.
