A drafting machine, also known as a drafting arm, is a specialized tool for technical drawing.

It is designed to help engineers and designers create precise drawings. These professionals need to draw lines that are perfectly straight and accurate. The machine combines several tools into one single device. It allows a user to draw parallel lines and orthogonal lines easily. It also helps in drawing inclined lines at a preset angle. Without this tool, a person would need a complex set of separate tools. They would have to use a classic ruler, a square, and a protractor together.

The machine works through a clever mechanical design. It consists of a pair of scales that meet at a right angle. These scales are mounted on an articulated protractor head. This head allows for angular rotation, which means it can turn to different angles. The protractor head moves across the surface of a drawing board. It does this by sliding on two separate guides. These guides are anchored to the drawing board, either directly or indirectly. Each guide acts separately to control movement. One guide handles horizontal movement while the other handles vertical movement. You can also lock these guides independently to hold a position.

Different versions of the machine have existed over time. Older designs used a specific mechanism called a pantograph system. This system ensured the protractor head stayed in the same angular position during movement. To make the machine easier to use, the arms were balanced. Engineers used either a system of counterweights or springs for this purpose. There are also specialized versions of the machine for different tasks. Some are made for A0 double-sized boards to create very large drawings. Other versions are built for copying-boards that have background illumination. These illuminated boards provide specific support for the user's work.

The history of the drafting machine is tied to a specific inventor. Charles H. Little invented the tool in 1901. He was granted U.S. Patent No. 1,081,758 for his invention. After this, he founded the Universal Drafting Machine Company. This company was located in Cleveland, Ohio, to manufacture and sell the instrument. By the 1920s, drafting machines were common in European design offices. There is some debate regarding exactly when they arrived in certain places. While some sources list 1930 as the introduction year, an Italian advertisement from 1913 mentions them.

Using a drafting machine is highly efficient for a professional designer. The machine is typically mounted on a drawing board with a hard, smooth surface. This board is attached to a base that allows for tilting. A user can tilt the working surface at any angle. It can move from a horizontal position to a vertical one. This flexibility makes the realization of a drawing much more convenient. The ability to adjust the angle of the board helps the user work comfortably. This setup ensures that the drawing surface is always at the best angle for the task.

In the modern era, the role of the drafting machine has changed significantly. The rise of computer-aided design, or CAD, has shifted how technical work is done.

In the professional sector, the use of these machines has declined drastically. They were first replaced by devices called pen plotters. Later, large-format inkjet printers became the standard for creating technical drawings. While the physical machine was once essential, digital tools now handle these precise tasks. The drafting machine remains a significant part of the history of technical design.

Understanding the drafting machine helps us see the evolution of design technology. It shows how we moved from manual tools to complex mechanical systems. Eventually, these mechanical systems gave way to digital computer systems. The machine represents a bridge between simple rulers and modern CAD software. It allowed for much higher precision than previous manual methods. This precision was vital for the development of complex engineering and architecture. Even though they are less common now, they changed how we visualize the world.
