Topographic Abney level

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An Abney level is a special tool used for surveying. Surveying is the way people measure the shape of the land. This tool is very helpful for finding how steep a hill is. It can also help people find heights or volumes. It is small enough to fit inside a coat pocket. This makes it easy for workers to carry it around.

Even though it is small, it is very accurate when used correctly. It is also not very expensive to make or buy.

The tool works using a few different parts. It has a tube that you look through to see a target. Inside, there is a movable spirit level. This level uses a tiny bubble to show if things are straight. A small mirror lets you see that bubble while you look at a far object. To use it, you look through the tube at a target. You move the level until the bubble sits right on a cross-hair. Then, you can read the slope from the scale on the tool.

A man named Sir William de Wiveleslie Abney invented this tool. He was an English chemist and an astronomer. He lived from July 24, 1843, until December 3, 1920. He worked for the School of Military Engineering in Chatham, England. He created the level before the late 1870s. It was an improvement on an older tool called the Locke hand level. In December 1870, a company called Elliott Brothers registered an improved version.

There are many different scales on an Abney level. Some scales show degrees of arc. Others show the percent grade of a slope. Some special versions show grade in feet per surveyor's chain. They can even show a math value called a cosine for distance. In 1871, a group called the Royal Geographical Society suggested explorers carry one. They thought it was a very convenient tool to have. In 1927, a helpful guide called The Abney Level Handbook was published.

Many different jobs use this tool every day. Foresters use it to measure how tall trees are. Miners use it to check the grade of roads in mines. Geologists use it to study rocks and cliffs. You can even use the square body of the tool to measure flat surfaces. You just place the tool on the surface and read the angle. It is a great way to turn a simple tool into a way to understand the world.
