It is used for tasks on a medium scale. These jobs are bigger than working on paper. But they are smaller than building big roads or bridges. People use these sticks to build furniture and cars. They are also helpful for building houses.

Sometimes, people use them as pointers for posters or projections.

Most metre-sticks work by using small lines called markings. A metre-stick has lines for every single millimetre. There are 1,000 millimetres in one metre. It also has markings for each centimetre. There are 100 centimetres in one metre. Every 5th millimetre has a slightly longer line. Every 10th centimetre is often marked more clearly.

History shows us how these tools have changed over time. In 1883, a Swedish engineer named Karl-Hilmer Johansson Kollén invented a special stick. He called it the "tumstock," which means "thumbstick" or "inch-stick." This was the first hybrid stick. It was made to help the country of Sweden switch to the metric system. These hybrid sticks show two different ways to measure things at once.

There are many different types of these measuring sticks. A standard metre-stick is usually one or two metres long. In the United States, a yardstick is typically one yard long. One yard is equal to 3 feet or 0.9144 metres.

Many sticks are made of wood or plastic. Some are made of metal. Metal sticks often have cork on the back. This cork adds friction to help the stick stay in place. Most wood models cost less than US$5.

Measuring sticks are part of our everyday world. You might see a carpenter using a folding ruler. These folding sticks are easy to carry for transport. You might also see them in science labs. In American schools, students use them to learn metric units. Some sticks even have metric units on one side and U.S. units on the other. This makes them act like a conversion table to help you switch between systems.
