Thermochemistry

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Thermochemistry is the study of heat energy. It looks at energy during chemical reactions. It also looks at phase changes like melting or boiling.

This science tracks how energy moves between a system and its surroundings. A system is the specific part of the universe being studied. Everything else is called the surroundings. Scientists use this to predict how much of a substance is needed. It also helps predict if a reaction will happen on its own.

Heat moves in two main ways during these changes. Some reactions are exothermic. These reactions release heat to the surroundings. Other reactions are endothermic. These reactions absorb heat from the surroundings.

A system can also be open or closed. An open system swaps both matter and energy. A closed system swaps energy but not matter. Some systems are isolated and swap neither. This helps us understand how energy works in different ways.

People have studied these heat changes for a long time. Joseph Black introduced the idea of latent heat in 1761. He saw that heating ice did not raise its temperature at first. Instead, the heat caused the ice to melt.

In 1780, Lavoisier and Laplace made an important law. They found that energy changes are equal and opposite when reversed. Later, Hess found a law in 1840 about heat summation. His work showed that energy change stays the same in one step or many.

Scientists use special tools to measure these heat changes. This method is called calorimetry.

It uses an enclosed chamber to watch a change. A thermometer or thermocouple monitors the temperature. Scientists plot this temperature against time on a graph. This helps them calculate important numbers like heat capacity. Modern tools like the differential scanning calorimeter provide quick read-outs. These tools make measuring heat much faster today.

Thermochemistry is part of a larger field called chemical thermodynamics. This broader field looks at all forms of energy exchange. It includes heat and also mechanical work. It even includes the exchange of matter.

When scientists look at all energy, they use new terms. They call these exergonic and endergonic reactions. This connects the study of heat to chemical bonds. It helps us see how the whole world moves energy around.
