He was born in Cologne on August 27, 1874. His father was a supplier of gas and plumbing tools. His uncle, Robert Bosch, was a pioneer who helped develop the spark plug. Carl studied at two different schools between 1892 and 1898. These were the Königlich Technische Hochschule in Charlottenburg and the University of Leipzig. He earned his doctorate in organic chemistry in 1898.

Bosch is most famous for his work with high-pressure chemistry. This is a way of doing science using very high heat and great force. He took a small lab method from Fritz Haber and made it work for huge factories. This new way of working is called the Haber–Bosch process. It takes nitrogen from the air and turns it into ammonia. To do this, Bosch had to build special tools. He designed large compressors and safe furnaces that could handle the pressure. He also found a better catalyst, which is a material that helps a reaction happen.

This work changed how the world grows food. The ammonia made by this process is used to create nitrogen fertilizer. Today, this process produces 100 million tons of fertilizer every year. It is estimated that one-third of the world's food comes from this method. This helps support nearly half of all people on Earth. Because of this huge impact, Bosch won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1931. He shared this prize with Friedrich Bergius.

Bosch was also a very important leader in business. He worked at BASF, which was the largest chemical firm in Germany. In 1925, he helped start a company called IG Farben. He served as the very first head of that company. Later, he used his skills to work on making synthetic fuel. He also helped develop the Bosch-Meiser process to make urea. These discoveries helped many different industries grow.

Outside of his lab, Bosch had many interesting hobbies. He was an amateur astronomer with his own observatory. He also loved to collect insects, minerals, and beautiful gems. Some of his meteorites were given to the Smithsonian. To honor his life, scientists named the asteroid 7414 Bosch after him. Bosch lived through a very difficult time in history. He opposed the Nazi regime and its many unfair rules. He died in Heidelberg on April 26, 1940.
