Karl Ferdinand Braun was a brilliant German physicist who changed how we communicate. He was born in Fulda, Germany, on 6 June 1850.

Braun is often called the "wireless wizard" because of his amazing work with radio. He shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909 with Guglielmo Marconi. This prize honored their work in developing wireless telegraphy. His many inventions helped create the foundation for our modern world.

Braun found a much better way to send radio signals through the air. Before his work, radio signals could not travel very far. Early inventors connected the antenna directly to the spark gap. This caused the signal to die out very quickly. Braun created a system with two separate parts. He used a primary circuit to create the signal. Then, he used inductive coupling to send that signal to the antenna.

This allowed the signal to stay strong for a much longer time.

His work led to incredible distance records in the early 1900s. In 1898, his new systems allowed signals to travel much further than 20 km. In 1899, he worked in Cuxhaven near the North Sea. On 24 September 1900, he sent signals to the island of Heligoland. This was a distance of 62 km.

He also invented the phased array antenna in 1905. This invention helped lead to the development of radar and smart antennas.

Braun was also a pioneer in the world of screens and electronics. In 1897, he built the first cathode-ray tube, or CRT.

A CRT is a glass tube that uses a beam of electrons to make a picture. This invention was the cornerstone for electronic television. Almost every TV and computer screen used this technology until the end of the 20th century. He also discovered how certain materials conduct electricity in only one direction. This discovery helped start the field of modern electronics.

Many things we use today started with Braun's curious mind. His work with semiconductors helped create the diodes used in electronics. He even helped start a famous company called Telefunken.

This company was one of the first to sell electronic televisions. You can see his influence in your smartphone, your TV, and even radar. He truly helped build the path for all wireless systems we use today.
