Ernst Otto Fischer was a famous German chemist. He changed how we understand metals and carbon. He focused on a field called organometallic chemistry. This is the study of how metals and carbon work together. His discoveries helped scientists see new ways to build molecules. This work was very important for the world of science.

Fischer worked with very special shapes called sandwich complexes. These molecules look like a sandwich. A metal sits in the middle of two carbon layers. He first studied a substance named ferrocene. He found the correct way this structure was built. He also found nickelocene and cobaltocene. Later, he found bis(benzene)chromium. This discovery showed a whole new class of these sandwich shapes.

Fischer began his journey in Solln, near Munich. He was born on 10 November 1918. His father was a physics professor at the Technical University of Munich. Ernst studied chemistry at that same university. He finished his studies in 1949. He then worked as an assistant to Professor Walter Hieber. He earned his doctorate in 1952.

Fischer visited many famous schools in the United States. He spoke at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1969. He also visited the University of Florida in 1971. He was a guest at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973. In 1973, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He shared this prize with Geoffrey Wilkinson. Fischer died in Munich on 23 July 2007.
