John B. Goodenough was a famous scientist who changed how we use energy.

He was a materials scientist and a physicist. This means he studied how different substances are made. He also studied how they behave. His work helped create the rechargeable batteries we use every day. These batteries power our phones and many other small tools. Without his discoveries, our modern world might look very different.

Goodenough discovered new ways to make batteries better. He focused on a part called the cathode. The cathode is one of the two main parts in a battery. In 1980, while working in Oxford, he found a special material. This material was called lithium cobalt oxide. It was very lightweight and held a lot of energy. This discovery helped double the capacity of lithium-ion batteries. Because of this, batteries could become much smaller and stronger.

His journey to becoming a great scientist was not always easy. He was born in Jena, Germany, in 1922. As a young student, he had dyslexia. This is a condition that makes reading and writing difficult. At that time, many people did not understand it well. He had to teach himself how to write. He worked very hard to succeed in school. He eventually graduated from Yale University and later earned a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1952.

Throughout his life, Goodenough earned many important honors. He worked at MIT and the University of Oxford. Later, he became a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He won many prizes like the National Medal of Science and the Draper Prize. In 2019, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He shared this prize with M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino. At 97 years old, he became the oldest person ever to win a Nobel Prize.

Today, we see the results of his work everywhere we look. When you use a cordless power tool, you are using his ideas. When people drive electric cars, they rely on battery technology he helped build. He even worked on new ideas like glass batteries. He wanted to find ways to use less fossil fuel. His goal was to help the Earth by finding better energy. He continued to study and work even when he was 98 years old.
