He became a lecturer in 1955 and a professor in 1957. By 1964, he held the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry. 
Fischer received many honors for his scientific achievements. In 1973, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He shared this prestigious award with Geoffrey Wilkinson. This prize recognized their work on organometallic compounds. He also joined the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in 1964. In 1969, he became a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists, known as the Leopoldina. He published approximately 450 journal articles during his life.
